Esti Van Tonder

Esti Van Tonder, also known as Esti Olivier, is a professional sprint kayaker from South Africa. Her career in competitive kayaking has been marked by dedication and a continuous pursuit of excellence. She has consistently pushed her limits, participating in and achieving success at various international events. Her journey in the sport has involved extensive training both on and off the water, reflecting significant focus and commitment.

Throughout her career, Van Tonder has achieved notable milestones. She is a two-time U23 World Championships and World Cup A-finalist, demonstrating her competitive standing at a global level. In 2019, she won two events at the African Games in Morocco, which secured two Olympic quotas for Tokyo 2020. Although she was unable to participate in Tokyo due to funding issues, she continued to compete at a high level. In November 2023, she again secured two Olympic quotas in the K1 500 and K2 500 events at the continental championships. Her performance at the 2021 ICF Canoe-Kayak World Cup 2 in Barnaul, Russia, resulted in her first international medal, a silver in the women’s K1 event, finishing narrowly behind Portugal’s Joana Vasconcelos. She has also co-founded the Academy for Canoe Development, a non-profit organization focused on supporting disadvantaged children through sport and academic assistance.
