Ewen Bremner

Born on January 23, 1972, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ewen Bremner, the son of two art teachers, initially aspired to be a circus clown. His career trajectory shifted when television director Richard D. Brooks offered him an opportunity in screen acting. This led to early notable roles such as a Glasgow schoolboy in Charles Gormley’s “Heavenly Pursuits” (1986) and the lead in the BBC Scotland feature-length adaptation of William McIlvanney’s short story “Dreaming” (1990). These initial experiences laid the groundwork for a career that would see him collaborate with respected figures in global cinema.

Bremner’s breakout role arrived in 1996 with Danny Boyle’s critically acclaimed film “Trainspotting,” where he portrayed Daniel “Spud” Murphy. Prior to this, he had originated the role of Mark Renton in the Edinburgh Traverse Theatre production, later transitioning to the iconic Spud for the film, a role he reprised in “T2: Trainspotting” (2017). His performance earned him screen recognition, particularly for the character’s memorable job interview scene. He demonstrated his versatility further with a striking performance in Mike Leigh’s “Naked” (1993) and received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Julien, the eponymous schizophrenic hero, in Harmony Korine’s “Julien Donkey-Boy” (1999), a film strictly adhering to the Dogma 95 movement’s ultra-realist principles. He also worked with acclaimed director Werner Herzog in “Julien Donkey-Boy.”

Over the years, Bremner has established himself through a variety of roles in both independent and major Hollywood productions. His filmography includes supporting roles in high-profile films such as Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor” (2001), Ridley Scott’s “Black Hawk Down” (2001), and “Alien vs. Predator” (2004). He has collaborated with notable directors, appearing in Woody Allen’s “Match Point” (2005) and “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” Frank Oz’s comedy “Death at a Funeral” (2007), and Bong Joon-Ho’s “Snowpiercer” (2013). More recently, he joined the DC Universe in “Wonder Woman” (2017) and reprised his role in “T2: Trainspotting” (2017). He continues to work in television, including the TNT series “Will” (2017), and has a rich theatre background with credits at various esteemed venues.
