Faf du Plessis, born on July 13, 1984, in Pretoria, Gauteng Province, South Africa, is a prominent international cricketer. He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and the University of Pretoria. His early career included playing for Northerns and the Titans in South African domestic cricket. He also played for Lancashire County Cricket Club in England for multiple seasons, starting in 2008, where his fielding was particularly noted. Du Plessis made his One Day International (ODI) debut for South Africa in January 2011 against India, scoring an unbeaten 60 runs. He was part of South Africa’s preliminary squad for the 2011 World Cup.
His Test match debut followed in November 2012 against Australia, where he scored 188 runs and was named Man-of-the-match for his performance. He continued to build a strong international career, being named South Africa’s T20 captain in December 2012 and then full-time skipper in February 2013. In 2015, du Plessis became the first South African player to score centuries in all three formats of the game (Test, ODI, and T20I). He was appointed Test captain in December 2016 and assumed full-time captaincy across all formats in August 2017. He led South Africa in several significant victories, including being the first international captain to defeat Australia in Australia in all three formats and to achieve a 5-0 whitewash in an ODI series against Australia in 2016. In 2019, he was recognized as the South African Cricketer of the Year. He retired from Test cricket in February 2021 to focus on limited-overs formats.
Throughout his career, du Plessis has been involved in major franchise cricket leagues globally. He played for Chennai Super Kings (2011-2015, 2018-2021) and Rising Pune Supergiant (2016-2017) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He also played for Paarl Rocks (2018-2019) in the Mzansi Super League, leading them to their first title. More recently, he captained Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL (2022-2024) and was acquired by Delhi Capitals for the 2025 season as vice-captain. He has also played for teams like Saint Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League, Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League, and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket, where he became the all-time highest-scoring T20 Captain in 2025.
