Fintan McCarthy

Fintan McCarthy was born on November 23, 1996, in Skibbereen, Co Cork, Ireland. He began rowing after observing the 2012 London Olympic Games, a pivotal moment that steered his athletic career. Four years later, in 2016, McCarthy secured his inaugural Irish national title alongside his brother Jake. His early career saw consistent development, culminating in his first European final appearance with his brother in 2019.

McCarthy joined forces with Paul O’Donovan, forming a successful partnership in the men’s lightweight double scull. This collaboration led to their first World Championship title in 2019 staged in Ottensheim. The duo then achieved a significant milestone by winning Ireland’s first-ever Olympic rowing gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2020. Their dominance continued, securing back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the same event at the Paris 2024 Games. In addition to Olympic successes, McCarthy and O’Donovan have claimed three World Championships (2019, 2022, 2023) and two European titles (2021, 2022) in the lightweight double scull. Individually, McCarthy earned a European bronze medal in the lightweight single scull in 2020.

Fintan McCarthy studied physiology at University College Cork and is a member of Skibbereen Rowing Club. His contributions have significantly elevated Ireland’s profile in international rowing. He has consistently demonstrated high-level performance in the lightweight double sculls and has also competed in other rowing disciplines, including the lightweight single sculls, where he achieved a bronze medal at the 2020 European Rowing Championships in Poznań, Poland. His career reflects a sustained commitment to the sport, marked by multiple international titles and Olympic recognition.
