United States Fred Armisen is an American actor, comedian, musician, and writer known for his versatile career in sketch comedy, television, and film. He is recognized for co-creating and co-starring in acclaimed series such as "Portlandia," and for his extensive work on "Saturday Night Live."
With his comedy partner Carrie Brownstein, he co-created and co-starred in the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia.
Fereydun Robert Armisen was born on December 4, 1966, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He moved to New York as an infant and later lived briefly in Brazil during his youth, before being raised in Valley Stream, New York. Armisen attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan before choosing to pursue a career as a rock drummer. His early musical journey included playing drums for the punk rock band Trenchmouth starting in 1988, and later working as a background drummer for the Blue Man Group in the 1990s. This foundation in music would eventually blend with his comedic talents, setting the stage for his diverse career in entertainment.
Armisen gained prominence in comedy when he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” in 2002, remaining a cast member until 2013. During his tenure, he became known for a variety of recurring characters and celebrity impressions, including Barack Obama and Prince. His work on “Saturday Night Live” led to further collaborations, such as co-creating and starring in the IFC sketch comedy series “Portlandia” with Carrie Brownstein, which premiered in 2011. He also co-created and starred in the mockumentary IFC series “Documentary Now!” alongside Bill Hader and Seth Meyers, which began in 2015. Additionally, Armisen served as the bandleader and frequent drummer for The 8G Band on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from 2014 until 2024.
His career also includes numerous film and television roles, both as an actor and a voice actor, in projects like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004), “Easy A” (2010), “The Looney Tunes Show” (2011), “The Lego Ninjago Movie” (2017), and “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” (2021). Armisen has received multiple awards and nominations, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album in 2019 for “Standup for Drummers,” and two Peabody Awards: one in 2008 for his contribution to “Saturday Night Live’s” political satire and another in 2011 for “Portlandia.” He also co-created and executive produced the Spanish-language series “Los Espookys,” which aired from 2019 to 2022.
