Winston Duke was born on November 15, 1986, in Argyle, Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago. At the age of nine, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, United States. He graduated from Brighton High School in Rochester, New York, in 2004. Duke pursued higher education at the University at Buffalo, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in theatre. Later, he completed a Master of Fine Arts in acting from the Yale School of Drama in 2013.
Duke began his acting career in theatre productions with the Portland Stage Company and Yale Repertory Theatre. He then transitioned to television, securing minor roles in series like “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 2014, “The Messengers” in 2015, and a recurring role as Dominic Besson/Mini in “Person of Interest” from 2014 to 2015. In 2016, he appeared in “Modern Family” for three episodes. His breakout role came in 2018 as M’Baku in Marvel’s “Black Panther,” a performance which was highlighted as one of the best of that year by The New York Times. He reprised this role in “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), both of which are among the highest-grossing films to date.
Following his success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Duke expanded his filmography to include significant roles in various genres. In 2019, he starred in Jordan Peele’s horror film “Us.” He also played the lead role of Will and served as an executive producer for the fantasy drama film “Nine Days,” released in 2020. That same year, he co-starred with Mark Wahlberg in the Netflix action-comedy “Spenser Confidential.” Duke took on the voice role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Spotify podcast audio drama “Batman Unburied” in 2022. He returned as M’Baku in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in 2022 and appeared in “The Fall Guy” in 2024. His upcoming projects include “Avengers: Doomsday” in 2026.
