About

Geoff Keighley was born on June 24, 1978, in Canada. Growing up in suburban Toronto, he developed an early interest in video games, influenced by his parents’ careers at IMAX which exposed him to the world of awards shows. This early exposure fostered a lifelong ambition to create a similar prestigious platform for video games. His career in video game journalism began in 1996 with GameSlice, a website dedicated to game reviews and news. He further expanded his writing by contributing to publications like Business 2.0, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Entertainment Weekly.

Keighley’s early professional development included attending the University of Southern California for a business degree in 1997. During this time, he initiated ‘The Final Hours’ series, long-form articles for GameSpot exploring the development cycles of popular games, starting with ‘Unreal’ and continuing with titles like ‘Daikatana’ and ‘Metal Gear Solid 2.’ These projects provided him with deep access to game development studios and established valuable industry connections, including with Valve Corporation. His work gained recognition, with GameDaily naming him journalist of the year in 2005 and NewsBios.com listing him among the top 30 business journalists under 30 in 2004.

His television career commenced with roles on G4’s ‘The Electric Playground’ and hosting ‘Game Head’ on Spike TV, the highest-rated video game show on television at the time. Keighley’s dedication to the industry also led him to conceptualize and produce specials for MTV and consult for Discovery Channel documentaries. A pivotal moment came when he founded The Game Awards in 2014, independently funding it after parting ways with Spike TV’s VGA Awards, which he felt had become too commercialized. He continues to host and produce The Game Awards annually, along with Summer Game Fest and Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, solidifying his role as a central figure in video game media and events.
