Duane Gill, born on July 10, 1959, in Glen Burnie, Maryland, embarked on his professional wrestling career in 1990. He initially gained recognition on the independent circuit as part of a masked tag team named The Lords of Darkness, alongside Barry Hardy. Working under the name Pain, Gill and Hardy secured the Mid-Eastern Wrestling Federation’s first-ever Tag Team Championship in 1991. Their early career also included stints in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in late 1993 and early 1994. Gill made his debut in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1991, primarily serving as an enhancement talent, often appearing on programs such as “WWF Superstars of Wrestling” and “WWF Wrestling Challenge.” He frequently competed against prominent figures of the era, including The Undertaker, Kamala, and The Texas Tornado. In the early 1990s, he occasionally teamed with Barry Hardy as The Executioners and, for a brief period, as The Toxic Turtles. These early years established Gill as a consistent presence in the wrestling landscape, showcasing his dedication through numerous matches and diverse character portrayals.

Gill returned to the WWF in 1998, joining The J.O.B. Squad, a faction known for its underdog appeal. A significant turning point in his career occurred on November 23, 1998, when he unexpectedly defeated Christian to win the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship. This victory marked the beginning of his most famous persona: Gillberg. As Gillberg, he adopted a parody character of then-rival promotion World Championship Wrestling’s top star, Goldberg. His gimmick included a pre-recorded crowd chant, stagehands with sparklers, a drawn-on tattoo, and the catchphrase “Who’s First?” The character quickly resonated with fans for its comedic elements and satire of a major wrestling figure. Gillberg held the Light Heavyweight Championship for 15 months, making him the longest-reigning champion in that title’s history. His unique portrayal cemented his status as a memorable figure during the WWF’s Attitude Era, blending humor with his in-ring presence.

Following his tenure as Light Heavyweight Champion, Gillberg continued to make intermittent appearances for WWE and actively wrestled on the independent circuit, often utilizing the Gillberg gimmick. Notable returns to WWE televisión included segments on “Raw” in 2003 to confront the real Goldberg, a participation in the 15th Anniversary of “Raw” in 2007, and surprise appearances in 2017 and 2021. In 2010, he established Gillberg’s Pro Wrestling Academy in Severn, Maryland, aiming to impart his wrestling knowledge and experience to a new generation of performers. Although he announced his retirement from active in-ring competition in February 2020 after a match against James Ellsworth, his influence and character continued through occasional WWE appearances. In November 2020, Gill suffered a heart attack but recovered, with support from the wrestling community. In an unexpected career development in June 2024, Gill was appointed Executive Director of the Montana VA Health Care System, demonstrating his commitment to public service beyond wrestling. His career exemplifies a blend of enduring entertainment and varied achievements.
