Gina Rodriguez was born on July 30, 1984, in Chicago, Illinois, to Puerto Rican parents. Her father, Genaro Rodriguez, was a boxing referee. She began her performing arts journey at age seven with the salsa dance company Fantasia Juvenil, continuing to dance into her teenage years. At sixteen, she was accepted into Columbia University NY’s Theatrical Collaboration program, which further solidified her interest in acting. She pursued formal training at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2005 after four years of intensive theatre training at the Atlantic Theatre Company and Experimental Theatre Wing. Early in her career, Rodriguez performed as Frida Kahlo in the world premiere of “Casa Blue: The Last Moments in the Life of Frida Kahlo” at the American Stage Theatre.
Her screen career began with appearances in television shows such as “Law & Order” (2004), “Eleventh Hour” (2009), “Army Wives,” and “The Mentalist.” A significant turning point came in 2012 with her breakout performance as Majo Tenorio in the independent musical-drama film “Filly Brown,” garnering critical acclaim and an Imagen Award. This role led to increased recognition and more prominent roles, eventually securing her career-defining lead role as Jane Villanueva in The CW satirical romantic dramedy series “Jane the Virgin” (2014–2019). For this role, she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2015, solidifying her status in Hollywood.

Her film credits include “Deepwater Horizon” (2016), “Annihilation” (2018), “Someone Great” (2019), and “Spy Kids: Armageddon” (2023). She has also ventured into voice acting, lending her voice to characters in animated films like “Ferdinand” (2017) and “Scoob!” (2020), and the Netflix animated series “Carmen Sandiego” (2019–2021).
