About

Goran Visnjic was born on September 9, 1972, in Sibenik, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. His early life included serving a one-year obligatory military service in the Yugoslav People’s Army as a paratrooper in 1990. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the onset of the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, Visnjic briefly joined the Croatian Army to defend his hometown before pursuing his passion for acting. After his military service, he moved to Zagreb to study at the Academy of Dramatic Art. During his second year at the academy, he secured the title role in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, becoming the youngest actor to ever portray the character at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, a role he continued to play for seven years and for which he won three national awards. His early screen debut was at the age of 16 in the 1988 Yugoslavian film “Braca po materi.”

Visnjic gained international recognition for his role as Dr. Luka Kovac in the highly acclaimed NBC medical drama “ER,” which he joined in 1999 following George Clooney’s departure. Before “ER,” he appeared in minor roles in films such as “The Peacemaker” (1997), “Welcome to Sarajevo” (1997), and “Practical Magic” (1998). His performance in “Welcome to Sarajevo”, where he played a Bosnian cab driver, caught the attention of talent agents, leading to career opportunities in the USA. In 1998, he appeared in Madonna’s music video for “The Power of Goodbye,” an opportunity that further opened doors in Hollywood. While on “ER,” Visnjic expanded his filmography with diverse projects, including starring in “The Deep End” (2001), co-producing and starring in “Posljednja volja” (2001), voicing Soto in the animated hit “Ice Age” (2002), and playing the titular role in the television miniseries “Spartacus” (2004).

His career continued to flourish with roles in major productions and television series. He was one of four finalists for the role of James Bond in 2005. From 2016 to 2018, he starred as Garcia Flynn in NBC’s “Timeless.” Other notable appearances include “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011) as Dragan Armansky, “Extant” (2014) as John Woods, and “The Boys” (2020) as Alastair Adana. He also portrayed historical figures such as Nikola Tesla in an episode of “Doctor Who” (2020) and Erik the Red in “Vikings: Valhalla” (2024). Visnjic received awards for his performances, including Best Actor at the Festival du Film de Paris and the Pula Film Festival for “Close Your Eyes” (2002) and “Duga mračna noć” (2004), respectively.
