Greg Kinnear was born on June 17, 1963, in Logansport, Indiana. His father served as a career diplomat with the US State Department, leading the family to relocate frequently, including living in Lebanon and Greece. During his time as a student in Athens, Kinnear hosted his first radio show titled “School Daze With Greg Kinnear.” He later returned to the United States to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson, graduating in 1985 with a degree in broadcast journalism. Following his graduation, Kinnear moved to Los Angeles, where he began his career as a marketing assistant.
Kinnear started in television as an on-location reporter for MTV, subsequently becoming the creator, co-executive producer, and host of “Best of the Worst” (1990-91). His career gained significant momentum as the first host of “Talk Soup” (1991-1995), a role he left to host the NBC late-night talk show “Later” (1994-1996). In 1994, he received his first major film role in the comedy “Blankman.” A notable turning point occurred in 1995 when he was cast as David Larrabee in Sydney Pollack’s remake of “Sabrina.” This was followed by a lead role in the 1996 comedy “Dear God.”
In 1997, Kinnear garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in James L. Brooks’ comedy-drama “As Good as It Gets.” He continued to build his filmography with roles in films such as “You’ve Got Mail” (1998), “Mystery Men” (1999), “Nurse Betty” (2000), “Loser” (2000), and “Someone Like You” (2001). His television roles include appearances in “Friends,” “Modern Family,” “House of Cards,” and the miniseries “The Stand.” Kinnear also portrayed John F. Kennedy in “The Kennedys” (2011) and Joe Biden in “Confirmation” (2016). He has a trademark of frequently playing real-life men in his roles.
