Born on October 11, 1989, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Henry Lau is a multifaceted artist with a background rooted in rich musical training. He began playing the piano at age four and the violin at age five, later mastering the electric violin, guitar, and percussion. His exceptional musical abilities were recognized early, earning him the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Regional Gold Medal for Level 10 in violin. Henry’s facility with multiple instruments and his fluency in English, Mandarin, Korean, and conversational Cantonese have enabled him to bridge cultural gaps throughout his career.
Henry’s career began when he was discovered at the 2006 SM Entertainment Global Audition in Toronto, one of only two out of three thousand applicants chosen. He debuted in 2007 as a violinist and dancer in Super Junior’s “Don’t Don” music video, leading to his inclusion in the Super Junior China sub-group, Super Junior-M, in 2008. The group released their debut album, “Me,” and later the mini-album “Super Girl,” earning critical acclaim including a nomination at the 21st Golden Melody Awards. After a hiatus to study music composition at Berklee College of Music, Henry launched his solo career in 2013 with the EP “Trap,” becoming SM Entertainment’s first male solo artist in 13 years. His single “It’s You,” released in 2017, achieved significant success as the most streamed Korean original soundtrack on Spotify for two consecutive years.
Demonstrating a strong trajectory in acting, Henry made his Hollywood debut in 2019 with the film “A Dog’s Journey,” produced by Amblin Entertainment. In 2020, he starred in the action-fantasy movie “Double World,” which marked the first simultaneous global release for a Mainland Chinese film on Netflix and iQIYI. Beyond music and film, Henry is recognized for his television appearances on shows such as “Real Man” and “I Live Alone,” where his natural optimism and musical improvisations garnered widespread popularity and earned him multiple awards, including the Best Newcomer Award in 2014 and the Excellence Male Award in 2017 at the MBC Entertainment Awards. In 2018, Henry departed from SM Entertainment to establish his own agency, Monster Entertainment Group, with his brother, Clinton, further expanding his global brand.
