Hideo Kojima was born on August 24, 1963, in Setagaya, Tokyo, later relocating to Kobe. His upbringing fostered a strong interest in film and writing, which profoundly influenced his later career. A chance encounter with Nintendo’s Entertainment System in the mid-1980s shifted his focus from filmmaking to video games. In 1986, he joined Konami Entertainment, initially working in the MSX home computer department. Despite his initial disappointment with hardware limitations, Kojima channeled his creativity into developing several impactful games. His early work resulted in significant titles like ‘Metal Gear’ (1987) and ‘Snatcher’ (1988), establishing his unique approach to game design.
Kojima’s career progression saw him creating instant classics and pushing boundaries in interactive entertainment. ‘Metal Gear’ established the stealth game genre, while ‘Snatcher’ and ‘Policenauts’ were praised for their cinematic presentation. His major breakthrough came with ‘Metal Gear Solid’ (1998) for the PlayStation, which sold over 5.5 million copies and transformed him into a recognized figure in the gaming world. He continued this success with ‘Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty’ (2001) and ‘Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater’ (2004), both of which were critically acclaimed for their complex narratives and advanced gameplay mechanics. Beyond the ‘Metal Gear’ series, he also produced ‘Zone of the Enders’ (2001) and ‘Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand’ (2003).
In 2005, Kojima founded Kojima Productions within Konami, further solidifying his influence in the industry. He was appointed Vice President of Konami Digital Entertainment in 2011. Following a controversial departure from Konami in 2015, he independently re-established Kojima Productions. His first game as an independent developer was ‘Death Stranding’ (2019), which garnered positive reviews and commercial success. He is currently working on ‘Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’ (2025), a horror game titled ‘OD’, and a new action-espionage game, ‘Physint’, continuing to explore new narrative and technological frontiers in gaming.
