Christopher Hikaru Nakamura was born on December 9, 1987, in Hirakata, Japan. His family relocated to the United States when he was two, and he was raised in White Plains, New York. Nakamura began playing chess at seven and quickly demonstrated exceptional talent. He achieved the title of chess master from the United States Chess Federation at age 10, becoming the youngest American to do so at the time. In 2003, at 15 years and 79 days, he broke Bobby Fischer’s record to become the youngest American Grandmaster.
Nakamura’s early career saw him win the 2005 U.S. Chess Championship, and he continued to develop into a world-class player. By May 2014, he ranked No. 1 in the world on both FIDE’s official rapid and blitz chess rating lists, a position he has maintained at or near since. He has represented the United States in seven Chess Olympiads, earning a team gold medal in 2016 and two team bronze medals. In 2022, he became the World Fischer Random Chess Champion.
