Howard Fineman

Howard Fineman was a veteran political journalist and television pundit, renowned for his incisive reporting and analysis that spanned nearly five decades across print, cable news, and online media. He began his distinguished journalism career at The Louisville Courier-Journal in the early 1970s, where he extensively covered environmental issues, the coal industry, and state politics, laying a foundation for detailed reporting. His expertise led him to the newspaper’s Washington bureau in 1978, further solidifying his grasp of the national political landscape. In 1980, Fineman joined Newsweek, embarking on a nearly 30-year tenure that saw him quickly ascend through the ranks.

He was appointed Chief Political Correspondent in 1984, then Deputy Washington Bureau Chief in 1993, and ultimately Senior Editor in 1995. During his impactful time at Newsweek, Fineman was a central figure in the magazine’s political coverage, contributing numerous cover stories and providing in-depth reporting on nine presidential campaigns, significantly shaping national discussions with his blend of breaking news and measured analysis. Following his tenure, Fineman transitioned to online journalism, serving as political editor of The Huffington Post in 2010 and later as global editorial director of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group. From 2017 to 2019, Fineman shared his expertise as a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School of Communications, where he taught a specialized seminar on ‘New Media Journalism and Politics in the Trump Era.’ In 2020, he continued to contribute his insightful analysis as a contributing correspondent for RealClearPolitics during the critical 2020 election cycle.
