Ian Barrows

Born on January 14, 1995, Ian Barrows grew up in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he started his sailing career in Optis. His early passion for the sport led him to larger dinghies such as 420s, Lasers, and Bytes. During his youth career, Ian achieved significant milestones, including a gold medal in the Byte class at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore (note: IMDB says 2018, Wikipedia says 2010), and multiple National Championships in the FJ and 420 classes in 2014 and 2015. He also secured 2nd place at the 2010 Byte World Championship and the 2008 Opti World Championship. These early successes established his reputation as a formidable competitor in the sailing world.

Ian graduated from Yale University in 2017 with a degree in Economics. During his time at Yale, he was a key member of the sailing team that won eight National Championships. Individually, he was a four-time collegiate All-American and was recognized as the College Sailor of the Year in 2017. His collegiate career highlights include first-place finishes at the ICSA Team Race National Championship in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and the ICSA Coed National Championship in 2014. These achievements underscored his consistent performance and leadership within collegiate sailing.

Following his collegiate career, Ian focused on an Olympic campaign. Initially, he teamed with Mitchell Kiss for the 2020 Olympics but narrowly missed qualification. For the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ian partnered with Hans Henken. This partnership resulted in a bronze medal in the 49er event at their Olympic debut, marking the first sailing medal for Team USA since Rio 2016 and the first in the 49er class since Sydney 2000.
