Iffy Onuora

Following a distinguished professional football career spanning nearly 500 matches and scoring 133 goals, Iffy Onuora transitioned into a prominent figure in equality, diversity, and inclusion within sports. Onuora established his professional playing career as a striker, notably with Huddersfield Town from 1989 to 1994, where he made 165 appearances and scored 30 goals. His impactful tenure at Huddersfield was followed by spells at Mansfield Town (1994-1996), Gillingham (1996-1998), Swindon Town (1998-2000), and a second period at Gillingham (2000-2002). He also played for Sheffield United, Wycombe Wanderers, Grimsby Town, and Tranmere Rovers before concluding his playing days at Huddersfield Town in 2004.

Upon retiring from playing in 2004, Onuora swiftly moved into coaching and management, securing his UEFA Pro Licence in July 2007. He held managerial roles at Swindon Town (2005-2006), served as caretaker manager at Gillingham (2007), and acted as manager at Lincoln City (2008). His coaching expertise extended internationally when he was appointed head coach of the Ethiopian national football team from 2010 to 2011. In 2012, Onuora made a significant shift into advocacy, joining the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) as an equalities officer and regional coach, dedicated to improving opportunities for Black, Asian, and minority ethnic coaches within the sport.

His leadership in this capacity has cemented his reputation as a transformative leader in sports EDI. Further testament to his profound contributions, Onuora is slated to be honored by the University of Bradford in 2025 for his enduring impact and dedication to advancing inclusion.
