About

Joanne Rowling, better known as J. K. Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. She grew up in a middle-class family, with a sister named Dianne. Her early life included moving to Winterbourne and then Tutshill, attending St Michael’s Church of England Primary School and later Wyedean School and College. Rowling showed an early interest in storytelling, writing her first story, “Rabbit,” at age six, inspired by Richard Scarry’s books, and later “The Seven Cursed Diamonds” around age eleven or twelve. She pursued French and classics at the University of Exeter, graduating in 1987 after a year in Paris.

After university, Rowling moved to London, working temporary jobs and as a researcher for Amnesty International. In 1990, during a delayed train journey from Manchester to London, she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series. This period was marked by personal challenges, including the death of her mother in December 1990 and a subsequent move to Porto, Portugal, in November 1991 to teach English. There, she met and married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes in October 1992, and their daughter Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes was born in July 1993. The marriage was short and tumultuous, ending in separation in November 1993, after which Rowling moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, with her daughter, living on public assistance and experiencing deep depression while continuing to write.

Rowling completed “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in June 1995. Despite initial rejections from twelve publishers, Bloomsbury Publishing acquired the manuscript. The book was published on June 26, 1997, marking the beginning of the highly successful Harry Potter series. Warner Bros. purchased the film rights in 1999, leading to a global media franchise. After the conclusion of the Harry Potter series in 2007, Rowling ventured into adult fiction with “The Casual Vacancy” (2012) and the Cormoran Strike crime fiction series, published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, beginning with “The Cuckoo’s Calling” (2013). Her philanthropic efforts include establishing the Volant Charitable Trust in 2000 and co-founding Lumos in 2005.
