About

Born Craig Kenneth Bruderlin on July 18, 1940, in Westwood Village, Los Angeles, California, James Brolin developed an interest in film from a young age. He attended Santa Monica City College and studied drama at the University of California Los Angeles. He signed a contract with 20th Century Fox in 1960, initially appearing as a contract player in films like ‘Take Her, She’s Mine’ (1963) and ‘Fantastic Voyage’ (1966). His early television work included guest appearances on popular series such as ‘Batman’ and ‘The Virginian’. In 1969, Brolin secured his breakthrough role as Steven Kiley on the medical drama ‘Marcus Welby, M.D.’, a performance that earned him an Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.

Brolin transitioned successfully into leading film roles in the 1970s, showcasing his presence in movies such as ‘Skyjacked’ (1972) and ‘Westworld’ (1973). He continued to star in diverse projects including ‘Gable and Lombard’ (1976), ‘The Car’ (1977), ‘Capricorn One’ (1978), and ‘The Amityville Horror’ (1979). His career also saw him come close to portraying James Bond in ‘Octopussy’ (1983). Returning to television, Brolin became a familiar face as Peter McDermott in Aaron Spelling’s prime-time soap opera ‘Hotel’ (1983–1988), a role for which he received two Golden Globe nominations and also served as a director for several episodes.

In later years, James Brolin continued to be a prolific actor, producer, and director. He played significant roles in films like Steven Soderbergh’s Oscar-winning ‘Traffic’ (2000) as General Ralph Landry and Steven Spielberg’s ‘Catch Me If You Can’ (2002) as Jack Barnes. His portrayal of Ronald Reagan in the 2003 television film ‘The Reagans’ earned him further Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. From 2015 to 2019, he starred as John Short in the CBS comedy ‘Life in Pieces’ and voiced Emperor Zurg in the 2022 ‘Toy Story’ spin-off film, ‘Lightyear’. With a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 1998, Brolin’s enduring career demonstrates a consistent presence in entertainment.
