Jan Vertonghen

Jan Bert Lieve Vertonghen, born on April 24, 1987, in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, embarked on his football journey with youth clubs VK Tielrode and Germinal Beerschot before joining the Ajax youth academy in 2003. He advanced to Ajax’s senior team in 2006, initially playing as a midfielder before settling into a regular role as a centre-back. During his tenure at Ajax, he made 220 appearances and scored 28 goals across all competitions, serving as captain from 2011 to 2012. His time at Ajax was marked by significant achievements, including two Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cup titles. In 2012, his performance was recognized with the Dutch Footballer of the Year award, solidifying his status as a key player in Dutch football.

Vertonghen’s career continued to evolve with a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in July 2012, costing approximately 12 million Euros. Over eight years with Tottenham, he made 315 appearances. His impact was immediate, earning him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year in his first Premier League season (2012-2013). Throughout his time at Tottenham, he was a consistent performer, contributing to the team’s appearance in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final. He was also named the club’s Player of the Year in 2018. Following his departure from Tottenham, Vertonghen joined Portuguese club Benfica in 2020, where he played for two seasons, and then moved to Anderlecht in 2022, where he retired from professional football in March 2025. His club career spanned 520 appearances and 36 goals.

Internationally, Vertonghen represented Belgium, debuting in 2007. He holds the record for the most caps in the history of the national team with 157 appearances. Key international milestones include contributing to Belgium’s fourth-place finish at the 2008 Olympics and a third-place finish at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He also participated in UEFA Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and Euro 2024. Beyond his professional playing career, Vertonghen has engaged in community work through the Jan Vertonghen Foundation, which focuses on creating playgrounds with special interactive equipment. He announced his retirement from international football on July 5, 2024, concluding a 17-year career with the national team.
