Jason Statham was born in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England, on July 26, 1967. His early life was characterized by athletic pursuits; he was a diver on the British National Diving Team for 12 years, competing for England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in the 10-meter, 3-meter, and 1-meter events, placing tenth, eleventh, and eighth respectively. Prior to his acting career, he also worked as a fashion model for brands such as French Connection, Tommy Hilfiger, and Levi’s, and as a street merchant. His introduction to acting came through director Guy Ritchie, who cast him in his debut role as Bacon in “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” (1998), leveraging his background as a market stall salesman. This initial collaboration was commercially successful, leading to his role in Ritchie’s subsequent film, “Snatch” (2000).
Statham’s career progressed with a variety of roles across action and science fiction films at the start of the new millennium, including “Ghosts of Mars” (2001) and “The One” (2001) with Jet Li. A significant turn came in 2002 when he was cast as Frank Martin in “The Transporter,” a role he reprised in its sequels, solidifying his status as an action star. He further expanded his presence in Hollywood with films like “The Italian Job” (2003) and “Cellular” (2004). The 2000s also saw him star in popular action films such as “Crank” (2006) and “Crank: High Voltage” (2009), as well as “War” (2007) and “The Bank Job” (2008). His contributions to the action genre continued into the 2010s with his role as Lee Christmas in “The Expendables” franchise (starting in 2010) and as Deckard Shaw in the “Fast & Furious” franchise (first appearing in 2013).
Statham has demonstrated consistent commercial success throughout his career, with his films grossing over $8.5 billion worldwide by 2017. His work has positioned him as a prominent figure in the action film industry, known for tough, uncompromising characters and often performing his own stunts, a commitment recognized by his induction into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
