J’den Cox

J’den Michael Tbory Cox, born on March 3, 1995, in Columbia, Missouri, embarked on his wrestling journey at the age of four. His early career saw him train with Mike Eierman from 2006, developing skills that would define his future. While attending Hickman High School, Cox not only excelled as an all-state linebacker but also dominated the wrestling scene, accumulating an impressive 205-3 record. He became the first Missouri wrestler to secure four state titles in four different weight classes, spanning from 171 pounds to heavyweight. His high school national achievements included a Cadet National Championship in Greco-Roman in 2011 and a Junior National Championship in freestyle in 2012, setting the stage for his collegiate and international career.

Cox continued his remarkable trajectory at the University of Missouri, where he wrestled for the Missouri Tigers at 197 lbs, bypassing a redshirt year. He quickly made an impact, winning a MAC championship and becoming the second seed in the 2014 NCAA Championships. His victory over Nick Heflin of Ohio State made him a national champion, one of only 14 true freshman national champions in NCAA Division 1 history. This achievement earned him the 2014 MAC Wrestler of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. He went on to secure two more NCAA national championships in 2016 and 2017, concluding his collegiate career with an undefeated 28-0 record in his senior year. He is the first three-time national champion in the program’s history, holding the record for the highest winning percentage (.965, 136-5) and ranking second in total wins (136) for the Missouri Tigers.

Following his collegiate dominance, J’den Cox transitioned to international freestyle wrestling, capturing a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in the 86 kg category. He continued his international success by becoming a two-time World Champion in 2018 and 2019, consistently demonstrating his prowess on the global stage. Further accolades include a 2017 World Championship bronze medal, a 2022 World silver medal, and another World bronze medal in 2021. In 2024, after retiring from competitive wrestling, Cox assumed the role of National Freestyle Development and Resident Coach for USA Wrestling, where he now coordinates U.S. Pan American and World Teams at the U15, U17, and U20 levels, sharing his experience and mentorship with the next generation of wrestlers.
