Jess Walton was born on February 18, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, and raised in Toronto, Canada, where she began her acting career at 17 with a local theater company. In 1969, she moved to Hollywood, and by 1970, she secured a contract with Universal Studios. Throughout the 1970s, Walton made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows, including ‘Medical Center’, ‘Kojak’, ‘Marcus Welby, M.D.’, ‘Ironside’, ‘The Rockford Files’, ‘Gunsmoke’, ‘Cannon’, and ‘Barnaby Jones’. She also co-starred in films such as ‘The Strawberry Statement’ (1970), ‘The Peace Killers’ (1971), and ‘Monkeys in the Attic’ (1974). Her early career also included a role in ‘The Hunted Lady’ (1977).
Walton’s career faced a turning point when she entered rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction in 1980. She successfully completed the program and resumed her acting career in 1984 by joining the cast of the CBS daytime soap opera ‘Capitol’ as Kelly Harper, a role she held until the show’s cancellation in 1987. Later that same year, Walton began her signature role as Jill Foster Abbott on another CBS soap opera, ‘The Young and the Restless’. She earned critical acclaim for this portrayal, receiving a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1991, and later a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1997.
