Ji Chang-wook was born on July 5, 1987, in Anyang, South Korea. He began his professional journey in musical theatre, making his on-screen debut in the 2006 film ‘Days…’ and a minor television role in ‘You Stole My Heart’ in 2008. His official film debut was in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ in 2008. In 2009, he gained attention for his supporting role in the weekend family drama ‘My Too Perfect Sons,’ a series that achieved high ratings. His career progression continued with his first lead role in the 159-episode daily drama ‘Smile Again’ (2010–2011), where he portrayed a Korean-American short track speed skater, a role for which he underwent extensive training. This performance earned him the “Best Actor in a Daily Drama” award at the KBS Drama Awards.
His breakthrough came with the 2013–2014 historical drama ‘Empress Ki,’ where his portrayal of Toghon Temür earned him critical acclaim and a significant increase in popularity across Asia. Following this success, he starred in the action-thriller television series ‘Healer’ (2014–2015), which further solidified his international recognition, particularly in China. He pursued overseas ventures, taking on roles in Mandarin-language dramas like ‘The Whirlwind Girl 2’ and ‘Mr. Right.’ Upon his discharge from mandatory military service in 2019, he returned to acting with the romantic comedy ‘Melting Me Softly.’ His filmography also includes the commercially successful thriller film ‘Fabricated City’ (2017), where he played a jobless game addict framed for murder. Recent notable projects include the Netflix series ‘The Sound of Magic’ (2022) and the TV series ‘Welcome to Samdal-ri’ (2023–2024).
Throughout his career, Ji Chang-wook has received numerous accolades, including the “New Star Award” at the SBS Drama Awards in 2011 for ‘Warrior Baek Dong-soo,’ and the “Most Popular Actor (Overseas)” award at the China TV Drama Awards in 2015. In 2019, he was honored with the “Asia Celebrity (Actor)” and “Best Actor” awards at the Asia Artist Awards. In 2023, he received the AFA Next Generation Award at the 16th Asian Film Awards, recognizing his rising impact in the industry. Starting in March 2023, Ji Chang-wook transitioned from Glorious Entertainment to establish his own one-man agency, Spring Company, with his long-time manager, marking a new phase in his career. His philanthropy includes a ₩100 million donation in 2023 to aid victims of the Turkey–Syria earthquake.
