About

James Michael Smith was born on July 26, 1988, in Fontana, California. Growing up in Colton, California, a challenging neighborhood, Smith excelled in football from an early age, attending Colton High School. He was a three-year letterman, earning honorable mention all-league as a sophomore safety and first-team all-league and second-team all-county as a junior. In his senior year, he was first-team All-Southeastern Conference as both a wide receiver and cornerback. His high school career saw his team achieve a combined 30–6 record over three years, with playoff appearances each season. Smith also participated in basketball and track & field.

Smith continued his football career at the University of Colorado, initially surprising many as a mid-tier recruit who developed into a first-round NFL prospect. During the 2007 season, he distinguished himself as a special teams player and secondary depth, notably returning a Joe Ganz interception for a 31-yard touchdown against Nebraska. He further cemented his role by intercepting a lateral on a fake field goal against Nebraska in 2008, returning it 58 yards for another touchdown. From his junior year onward, Smith became a full-time starting cornerback for Colorado, consistently limiting opposing offenses and earning two-time All-Big 12 nominee honors and a spot on the Thorpe Award watch list.

His professional career began when the Baltimore Ravens selected him in the first round (27th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. Despite an ankle injury in his debut, he quickly made an impact, recording his first career interception in November 2011. He played 128 games over his career as a cornerback, all with the Baltimore Ravens from 2011 to 2021. A significant milestone occurred in 2013 when Smith played a crucial role in the Ravens’ Super Bowl XLVII victory, particularly with a key defensive stand against the San Francisco 49ers. He consistently proved himself as a top-tier defender, signing a four-year, $41.1 million contract extension in 2015. Smith officially retired from the NFL on October 3, 2022.
