Jose Juan Barea Mora, known as JJ Barea, was born on June 26, 1984, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. His early life involved basketball, culminating in playing for Indios de Mayagüez in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) in 2001. He then attended Miami Christian School in Florida, where he averaged 20 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals, contributing to a state title in his senior year. Barea further developed his skills at Northeastern University, where he consistently demonstrated strong performance, leading the America East Conference in scoring and assists in successive seasons. By his senior year in 2005-06, he was named Player of the Year in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), averaging 21.0 points and 8.4 assists per game, and became the school’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,209 points.
After going undrafted in the 2006 NBA draft, Barea signed as a free agent with the Dallas Mavericks. He made his NBA debut on November 4, 2006, and was later assigned to the Fort Worth Flyers of the NBA Development League, where he was named Performer of the Week in January 2007. His tenure with the Mavericks saw him become an integral part of the team, culminating in an NBA championship in 2011. During the playoffs, Barea’s performance against the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat was notable, with head coach Rick Carlisle electing to start him in critical games, a decision that contributed to the Mavericks securing their first championship.
Following his initial stint with the Mavericks, Barea signed a four-year, $19 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2011. While with the Timberwolves, he recorded his first career triple-double in March 2012, with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists. He later returned to the Dallas Mavericks in 2014, signing further multi-year contracts. His career in Dallas included notable performances such as a career-high 32 points in December 2015 and multiple Western Conference Player of the Week awards. Barea dedicated significant effort to hurricane relief in Puerto Rico, earning the NBA’s J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award and the Hall of Fame’s Mannie Jackson Award for his humanitarian work. He officially retired from professional basketball on July 20, 2022, and has since moved into coaching roles, including assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets starting in 2025.
