Stephen John Nash was born on February 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa. His family relocated to Regina, Saskatchewan, when he was 18 months old, eventually settling in Victoria, British Columbia. Nash engaged in various sports in his youth, including soccer, ice hockey, rugby, and lacrosse, before focusing on basketball at around 12 or 13 years old. He attended St. Michaels University School in Victoria, where he excelled, averaging 21.3 points, 11.2 assists, and 9.1 rebounds per game in his senior year and leading his team to a provincial championship title in 1991–92, earning him the province’s Player of the Year award.
After a successful high school career, Nash received a scholarship to Santa Clara University. During his four seasons with the Santa Clara Broncos (1992–1996), the team participated in three NCAA tournaments, and he was twice named the West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year (1995, 1996). Nash concluded his collegiate career as the Broncos’ all-time leader in assists (510) and free throw percentage (.862), and third on the all-time scoring list (1,689). His jersey, No. 11, was retired by Santa Clara in September 2006, marking him as the first student-athlete there to receive this distinction.
Nash was drafted 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1996 NBA draft. After two seasons, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998, where he developed into a prominent point guard. He was named to his first NBA All-Star Game in 2002 and earned All-NBA Third Team honors in both 2002 and 2003. Nash returned to the Phoenix Suns as a free agent in 2004, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the team’s performance. He notably received consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player awards in 2005 and 2006. After his playing career, Nash transitioned into coaching, serving as the head coach for the Brooklyn Nets from 2020 to 2022. In 2018, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. He also holds British and Canadian citizenship.
