Joan Allen

Joan Allen received a Best Actress Tony Award in 1988 for her acclaimed role in Lanford Wilson’s Burn This, appearing opposite John Malkovich, solidifying her status as a formidable stage talent. Prior to this, Allen began her theatrical career in 1977, joining Chicago’s acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company as one of its original members. Her early work earned her a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play for And a Nightingale Sang in 1984. She also made her early film appearances in a comedic performance in Compromising Positions (1985) and a dramatic role in Manhunter (1986).

Following her Tony win, Allen continued her success on the New York stage, earning a Tony nomination in 1989 for her performance in the title role of The Heidi Chronicles. Her film career gained significant momentum in the mid-1990s with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Pat Nixon in Oliver Stone’s Nixon (1995). This was quickly followed by a second consecutive Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (1996), further establishing her on-screen presence. She was also recognized with a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress for Pleasantville (1998).

More recently, Allen received a Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress for her poignant role in the critically acclaimed film Room (2015).
