Joan Allen

Joan Allen was born on August 20, 1956, in Rochelle, Illinois, as the youngest of four children to Dorothea Marie Wirth, a homemaker, and James Jefferson Allen, a gas station owner. She attended Rochelle Township High School where she was voted most likely to succeed. Her theatrical career began in 1977 when she joined Chicago’s acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company as one of its original members. Her early film roles included a comedic performance in “Compromising Positions” (1985) and a dramatic role in “Manhunter” (1986).

Allen’s work on the New York stage earned her significant acclaim. She received a Best Actress Tony Award in 1988 for her role in Lanford Wilson’s “Burn This,” appearing opposite John Malkovich. She was also Tony-nominated in 1989 for her performance in the title role of “The Heidi Chronicles.” Her film career gained further momentum with an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Pat Nixon in Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” (1995), followed by a second consecutive Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” (1996).

Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Allen continued to build a diverse filmography. Notable roles include appearances in “The Ice Storm” (1997), “Pleasantville” (1998), and the action film “Face/Off” (1997). For her starring role in “The Contender” (2000), she received Best Actress nominations at the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, SAG Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards. Allen also featured in significant film franchises, appearing in three Bourne films: “The Bourne Supremacy” (2004), “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007), and “The Bourne Legacy” (2012). Her television work includes Emmy nominations for “The Mists of Avalon” (2001) and for the title role in the biopic “Georgia O’Keeffe” (2009), for which she also served as executive producer. She married Peter Friedman in 1990, and they later divorced in 2002; their daughter Sadie was born in 1994. Allen is set to appear in the upcoming Netflix series “Zero Day” (2025).
