Joseph Albert List was born on April 6, 1982, in Stoughton, Massachusetts, and raised in Whitman, Massachusetts. He began his career in stand-up comedy in Boston in 2000, shortly after high school graduation. His early career involved performing in various venues, building a foundation for his comedic style characterized by observational humor and personal anecdotes.
List released his first stand-up comedy album, “So Far No Good,” in 2013, followed by “Are You Mad at Me?” in 2016. Throughout his career, he has appeared on prominent late-night talk shows, including “Conan,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” In 2015, he was a finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and recorded a half-hour special for Comedy Central. He further expanded his reach with a Netflix special for “The Standups” in 2018. More recently, he self-produced and released several one-hour comedy specials on YouTube, such as “I Hate Myself” (2020), “This Year’s Material” (2022), “Enough for Everybody” (2023), and “Small Ball” (2025).
Beyond stand-up, List co-hosts the weekly podcast “Tuesdays with Stories” with Mark Normand, which started in 2013. He has also hosted other podcasts including “Mindful Metal Jacket” and “Joe and Raanan Talk Movies” with Raanan Hershberg. In film, List co-wrote and starred in “Fourth of July” (2022), a comedy-drama directed by Louis C.K. In 2024, he directed and featured in the documentary “Tom Dustin: Portrait of a Comedian.”
