John Godwin’s association with the “Duck Dynasty” team and Duck Commander spans over two decades. He initially developed an interest in waterfowl hunting after growing up hunting deer with his father. As a teenager, he participated in his first duck calling contest, securing third place after Phil Robertson, the founder of Duck Commander, assisted in tuning his call. This early interaction foreshadowed his long-standing professional relationship with the Robertson family and the Duck Commander brand.

Since 2002, Godwin has been a full-time employee at Duck Commander, a hunting and outdoor recreation company based in West Monroe, Louisiana. His responsibilities have included constructing duck calls, managing supplies, and supervising the shipping department. During duck hunting season, his primary role is that of a decoy technician. In this capacity, he is responsible for determining the precise placement of decoys and performing maintenance on all equipment after hunts to ensure readiness for subsequent outings. He has been featured in various Duckmen series videos and instructional DVDs, including “Duckmen 7-18,” “The Art of Commanding Ducks,” and “Best of the Duckmen.” His public profile significantly expanded through his recurring appearances on the popular A&E reality television series “Duck Dynasty,” which aired from 2012 to 2017.

John Godwin announced his retirement from Duck Commander in January 2025 after 25 years of service. This announcement was made during an episode of the “Duck Call Room” podcast. Beyond his work with duck calls and decoys, Godwin is also an avid fisherman. He has won a Crappie Masters tournament alongside his teammate Jay Stone, and both are part of Fin Commander, a brand associated with the Duck Commander family.
