Dev Patel was born in London’s Harrow district on April 23, 1990, to parents of Gujarati-Indian descent from Nairobi, Kenya. Growing up in Rayners Lane, he developed an early interest in acting and martial arts, earning a 1st dan black belt in Taekwondo. His first professional acting role came in 2006 as Anwar Kharral in the E4 teen drama series “Skins” (2007-2008), a character partly based on his own personality, which he portrayed for two seasons.
Patel achieved mainstream recognition with his breakthrough role as Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008). This performance garnered him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor and several international awards including a British Independent Film Award and a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Performer. Following this success, he took on diverse roles in films like “The Last Airbender” (2010), “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2011), and as Neal Sampat in the HBO series “The Newsroom” (2012-2014).
His career reached a new height with his portrayal of Saroo Brierley in “Lion” (2016), for which he received critical acclaim, winning the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination in the same category. Patel has continued to expand his career into filmmaking, making his directorial debut with the critically lauded action film “Monkey Man” (2024), in which he also starred. He has also taken on producer roles in various projects, demonstrating his evolving influence in the film industry.
