Jovan “John” Lukic, born on December 11, 1960, in Chesterfield, England, embarked on his professional football journey as a goalkeeper. Lukic started his career as a schoolboy at Leeds United. He progressed through the ranks, making his senior debut for Leeds United in October 1979 within a UEFA Cup tie. He played 165 games for the club during his initial spell. In July 1983, Lukic transferred to Arsenal for £75,000 to replace Pat Jennings. He established himself as Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper by the 1984-85 season and was instrumental in significant club achievements, including the 1987 League Cup victory and the dramatic 1988-89 First Division title win.

After his first spell with Arsenal, which concluded in 1990 after 277 appearances, Lukic returned to Leeds United. He became their most expensive signing in May 1990 and continued to perform at a high level, contributing to Leeds United’s First Division title win in the 1991-92 season. He played an additional 265 games for Leeds. In July 1996, Lukic rejoined Arsenal on a free transfer, serving as an understudy, notably to David Seaman. His second tenure at Arsenal saw him make a brief return to the first team in 2000 due to injuries to other goalkeepers, where he made four appearances. One of these appearances, against Lazio in October 2000, made him the oldest player at the time to participate in a UEFA Champions League match at 39 years and 311 days.

Lukic retired from professional football in 2001, concluding a career marked by 596 league appearances across his two clubs. He later transitioned into coaching, working as a freelance goalkeeping coach as of 2011. Lukic’s career is notable for his longevity and his consistent performance at the highest levels of English football, earning him titles with both Arsenal and Leeds United. His contributions were recognized with a testimonial match held between his two clubs at Elland Road on August 31, 1996, where he played for both teams.
