The fabulously talented and amazing musician, record producer and composer John Paul Jones, aka John Richard Baldwin, is widely considered to be one of the most influential and important bassists, keyboardists and arrangers in the history of rock music. He is best known for being a founding member of the legendary rock band, Led Zeppelin. In 2010, he was honoured with a Gold Badge Award by The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors for his outstanding contribution to Britain’s music and entertainment industry, and with the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Marshall Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards.
Born and raised in Sidcup to musical parents, Jones started playing piano aged six. He studied music formally at school, and became choirmaster and organist at a local church when he was just 14, the same year he bought his first guitar. He joined his first band, The Deltas, when he was 15. His big break came in 1962 when he was hired by The Shadows for a two-year stint. He began studio session work in 1964, developing his skills at keyboards, arranging, and undertaking studio direction, and went on to work with various artists, including The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Dusty Springfield. He then released his debut single, Baja, under the stage name John Paul Jones. At this time he also met and played with Jimmy Page, and the duo eventually formed Led Zeppelin, with Robert Plant and John Bonham, in 1968. The band entered rock history, eventually dissolving in 1980 following the death of Bonham. Jones has since gone on to collaborate with such musical giants as Paul McCartney, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, the Foo Fighters, and Alice Cooper, as well as with his surviving Zeppelin band mates in a number of reunion shows. He released his debut solo album, Zooma, in 1999, followed in 2001 by The Thunderthief. He formed a new band, Sons of Chipotle, in 2019.
Jones connects with his huge fanbase through Instagram and Facebook, regularly posting about his life both in and out of the recording studio, and on and off the stage. He also has his own official website, johnpauljones.com
