Ice hockey player John Scott rose to fame after he was controversially voted captain of the Pacific Division team for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. The Canadian defenceman/winger saw action with Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes throughout his career, but became a household name in 2016 after an online campaign controversially saw him voted for the NHL All-Star Game despite having only made one assist with the Coyotes and scoring five goals during his career. Scott went on to steal the show in Nashville, scoring twice during Game 1 of the tournament and earning a standing ovation from the crowd after banging in his first goal. A film is currently in development based on the events surrounding his unlikely All-Star appearance and final professional season.
Born in Edmonton, Canada, Scott’s playing career began with Michigan Tech in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. He joined the American Hockey League’s Houston Aeros in 2006 before being signed by the Minnesota Wild for his first professional season in 2006-7.
Scott had previously signed a one year contract with the Arizona Coyotes in 2015 when he was announced as the winner of the NHL All Star Game fan vote for the 2015–16 season, the most votes of any player. After scoring two goals in the semi-final of the tournament to send his team into the final, he was named All-Star Game MVP, even though he had not been included in the voting. An online Twitter campaign with the hashtag #VoteMVPScott soon took off with support from fans, official team accounts and players including Henrik Lundqvist, and the NHL awarded Scott with the title. Now retired, Scott’s helmet from the All-Star game is currently in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
