Jolin Tsai was born on September 15, 1980, in Hsinchuang City, Taipei County, Taiwan. She began her musical journey by winning a television singing competition produced by MTV Mandarin in 1998. This led to her signing with Universal in March 1999 and releasing her debut album, “1019,” in September of the same year. This initial success established her as a teen idol. Throughout her early career, she consistently released commercially successful albums, including “Don’t Stop” (2000), which sold over 500,000 copies in Taiwan and remains her highest-selling album in the region, and “Show Your Love” (2000). In 2001, her music video for “Fall in Love with a Street” received the International Viewers’ Choice award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Tsai’s career saw a significant turning point in 2003 with the release of her fifth studio album, “Magic,” after signing with Sony. This album marked her transition to a more dance-oriented musical style. “Magic” sold over 360,000 copies in Taiwan and 1.5 million across Asia, becoming the highest-selling album by a female artist that year. Her influential album, “Dancing Diva” (2006), further solidified her position as a dance-pop artist and earned her first Golden Melody Award for Best Female Mandarin Singer. She continued to achieve critical and commercial success with subsequent albums such as “Muse” (2012) and “Play” (2014), both of which were highly acclaimed and received multiple Golden Melody Award nominations, with “Play” winning Best Mandarin Album. Her 2018 album, “Ugly Beauty,” achieved the highest annual album sales in Taiwan for 2019 and earned Album of the Year at the Golden Melody Awards.
Beyond her music, Tsai has also ventured into acting, appearing in TV series like “Hi Working Girl” (2003) and starring in the film “Agent J” (2007). She lent her voice to the Taiwanese version of Disney’s “Zootopia” (2016). Tsai has also established herself as a businesswoman, launching the nail polish brand Oops! Jealous (2007–2014) and the fashion brand Seventy Two Changes (2009–2011). She founded Eternal Music Production Co., Ltd. in 2009, gaining more creative control over her career. She consistently ranks on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list and has been recognized as Taiwan’s highest-paid female singer multiple times.
