About

José Enrique Sánchez Díaz, born in Valencia, Spain on January 23, 1986, began his playing career at hometown club Levante. After a short period, he was signed by rivals Valencia and gained La Liga experience through a loan spell at Celta Vigo, followed by a permanent move to Villarreal in 2006. His career then took him to England, where he spent nine years playing for Newcastle United and Liverpool. During his time in England, he made 161 Premier League appearances, notably winning the Football League Cup with Liverpool in 2012.

Enrique signed with Newcastle United in 2007 for £6.3 million, where he quickly established himself as a key player. His performances led to him being voted Newcastle United Player of the Season for 2009–10 and also earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year as the club secured promotion to the Premier League. In August 2011, he moved to Liverpool for a reported £6 million. At Liverpool, he continued to play a significant role, contributing to their League Cup victory in 2012. He also played in the 2012 FA Cup Final, where Liverpool were runners-up. His role at Liverpool evolved, at times playing as a left wing-back under manager Brendan Rodgers, and he scored his first goals for the club during the 2012–13 season. His career was affected by a persistent right knee injury, which limited his appearances in his later years at Liverpool.

After leaving Liverpool in 2016, Enrique returned to Spain, signing a two-year contract with Segunda División club Real Zaragoza. However, due to his ongoing knee issues, he announced his retirement from professional football in September 2017. In May 2018, Enrique was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare brain tumor, and underwent successful surgery. Following his recovery, which included receiving an all-clear in April 2019, he transitioned into new roles. He has since become involved in punditry, particularly for Sky Sports, and engages in motivational speaking, often sharing insights from his experiences in football and personal challenges. He also actively participates in social media, expressing his continued passion for Liverpool FC, and plays for the Liverpool legends’ team.
