Josh Draper is an emerging Australian rules footballer currently playing for the Fremantle Dockers in the Australian Football League (AFL). A product of Fremantle’s Next Generation Academy, Draper was signed as a Category B Rookie in the 2022 AFL draft, having qualified due to his Ethiopian heritage on his mother’s side. His journey to the top level has been characterized by determination and talent, as he worked hard to develop his skills in the competitive environment of AFL.
In his first season, Draper played for Peel Thunder in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), where he showcased his potential and adaptability. His persistence paid off in 2024 when injuries to key defenders Brennan Cox and Oscar McDonald opened the door for his senior debut. In Round 2, he made a splash against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium, collecting seven disposals and helping secure a 26-point victory for Fremantle.
Draper quickly solidified his place in the team, delivering impressive performances in subsequent matches. Notably, in a Round 3 clash against Adelaide, he recorded 14 disposals and four marks, further establishing himself as a valuable asset. His standout moment came in Round 16 against Sydney, where he was instrumental in a narrow one-point win, amassing 14 disposals and a career-high 11 spoils while filling in for the injured captain, Alex Pearce.
His remarkable progress earned him a nomination for the 2024 AFL Rising Star after a stellar performance in Western Derby 59, where he achieved 18 disposals at an impressive 94% efficiency. In recognition of his potential, Draper signed a two-year contract extension on August 12, ensuring he remains with Fremantle until at least the end of 2027. With his promising trajectory, Draper is set to be a key player in the AFL for years to come.
