Juan Sebastián Verón is an Argentinian former professional footballer who is currently the chairman of Estudiantes de La Plata ,where he previously served as Director of Sports.
As a former midfielder, Verón’ began his career in Estudiantes, before continuing into Argentina’s Boca Juniors. He also played for several clubs in the Italian Serie A, where he well-deservedly nabbed the Scudetto title with both Internazionale and Lazio, as well as a UEFA Cup with Manchester United, Chelsea and Parma. In 2004, FIFA named Verón in their 100 centenary list of the 125 greatest living footballers. The agile footballer was selected by the legend Pelé, as part of FIFA’s 100 year celebrations.
In 2006, Verón returned to Estudiantes, remaining here for almost another decade until his retirement in 2014, aside from a brief stint with Brandsen. Veron announced that he would return to first team football in the 2017 Copa Libertadores.
At international level, Verón obtained a staggering 73 caps for Argentina between 1996 and 2010, in which he scored nine goals. He represented his country at three FIFA World Cups, and at the 2007 Copa América, where he nabbed a runners-up medal.
Verón, who has both Italian and Argentinian citizenship, goes by the nickname La Brujita, translating to The Little Witch, which derives from his father Juan Ramón’s nickname, which was La Bruja (The Witch), another of Estudiantes’ championship winning players.
