Juliette Binoche

Juliette Binoche was born on March 9, 1964, in Paris, France. Her mother, Monique Yvette Stalens, was a director, teacher, and actress, and her father, Jean-Marie Binoche, was a sculptor, director, and actor. Her maternal grandparents were actors who were imprisoned at Auschwitz during World War II. Binoche began her artistic career at an early age, displaying an interest in acting during her teenage years and later attending the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique, though she left to pursue more practical experience. Her early career in the 1980s saw her establish herself in French cinema, with notable roles in films like Jean-Luc Godard’s “Hail Mary” (1985) and André Téchiné’s “Rendez-vous” (1985), for which she received her first César nomination. The long production of Leos Carax’s “Les Amants du Pont-Neuf,” completed in 1991, further solidified her reputation in France and earned her a European Film Award.

The 1990s marked Binoche’s transition to international acclaim, as she starred in critically and commercially successful films. Her performance as Julie Vignon de Courcy in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Three Colors: Blue” (1993) earned her the Venice Film Festival Best Actress Prize and a César Award. She also received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Hana in “The English Patient” (1996), making her the second French actress to win an Oscar in that category. This period also saw her in “Chocolat” (2000), which garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In addition to her film work, Binoche has had a significant presence in theater, including a London production of Luigi Pirandello’s “Naked” (1998) and a Broadway production of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” (2000), for which she received a Tony Award nomination. She has also explored dance, co-creating “in-i” with choreographer Akram Khan in 2008.
