Kevin Carroll was born on September 6, 1969, in Salisbury, North Carolina, USA. He pursued an education at New York University, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Carroll began his acting career with minor guest roles in various television series and films. Early work includes a short film in 1994, “Notes in a Minor Key,” followed by roles in “Ed’s Next Move” (1996) and “The Object of My Affection” (1998). A notable early film appearance was in “Being John Malkovich” (1999) as a Cab Driver, and he also appeared in “Paid in Full” (2002) as Calvin.

His career saw a significant turning point with his casting in the HBO television series “The Leftovers.” He joined the main cast as John Murphy for seasons 2 and 3, from 2015 to 2017, gaining wider recognition for his performance. Following “The Leftovers,” Carroll secured a recurring role in “The Catch” (2017) as Deputy Chief Nick Turner and a multi-season role in “Snowfall” (2017–2022) as Alton Williams, progressing to main cast in seasons 4-5. He also took on main cast roles in “Sacred Lies” (2018) as Dr. Alan Wilson and a recurring role in “The Walking Dead” (2019–2021) as Virgil for five episodes. In 2022, he portrayed Rayfield Mooty in the film “Till” and Zeke Dawes in the television series “Let the Right One In,” adding to his diverse portfolio. Carroll’s work in both film and television demonstrates a consistent career marked by varied and prominent roles.
