Kai Lenny was born on October 8, 1992, in Pāʻia, Hawaii, to windsurfing parents. He began surfing at age five, windsurfing at six, and kitesurfing by age nine, showcasing an early affinity for watersports. His upbringing on Maui, surrounded by diverse ocean conditions, contributed significantly to his development across multiple disciplines. Lenny secured his first sponsorship at age ten, and by thirteen, he became a Red Bull athlete after a kitesurfing competition. This early start laid the foundation for a career marked by continuous progression and mastery in the water.
Lenny achieved significant recognition in standup paddleboarding (SUP), winning first place at both the Hawaii Island Finals SUP Pro and the Sunset Beach SUP Pro in 2012. He further solidified his position by claiming the SUP Racing World Title a few months later, winning the season finals of the first Standup World Series championship races in O’ahu. Throughout his career, Kai Lenny has earned eight SUP world titles, making him the most decorated athlete in the sport. His expertise is not limited to SUP; he is known for his big wave surfing, demonstrating skill and courage at locations like Pe’ahi and Nazaré, Portugal. In February 2020, Lenny won the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge, competing against top big wave riders in massive conditions. In 2019, he was inducted into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame as the youngest honoree.
Beyond competition, Lenny maintains a commitment to innovation in watersports, always seeking to develop and utilize advanced equipment. He established the non-profit Positively Kai Foundation in May 2021, reflecting his engagement in community initiatives. Lenny is married to Molly Payne, an interior designer based in Maui, and they have three children. His career is characterized by an unwavering pursuit of excellence and a comprehensive approach to conquering various ocean challenges, from high-performance surfing to pioneering new watersport techniques.
