Upton demonstrated an early interest in modeling, which led to her signing with IMG Models in 2010. Before her modeling career took off, Upton was a successful equestrian, competing at a national level with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA). With her horse, Roanie, she secured three APHA Reserve World Championships in categories such as 13 and Under Western Riding, 13 and Under Horsemanship, and 14–18 Western Riding. This was followed by cover appearances in 2012, 2013, and 2017.
