Kenneth Layne was born on July 22, 1981, in Queens, New York, and grew up in Florida. He pursued American football as a strong safety, playing for Florida State University and later the University of South Florida before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). His journey into the spotlight began in 2002 when he participated in the second season of WWE Tough Enough, training under notable figures like Al Snow and Hardcore Holly, and emerging as one of the four finalists. Following his appearance on Tough Enough, Layne embarked on his professional wrestling career under the name Kenny King, initially working on the independent circuit. He further honed his skills under the tutelage of wrestling legends such as Nick Bockwinkel and Scott Casey at the Las Vegas Wrestling Academy. During this period, he also used the ring names “Tough Enough Kenny” and “The Natural” Kenny King, competing in promotions like Ultimate Pro Wrestling and Alternative Wrestling Show.
King’s wrestling career saw him join Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in 2005, though his initial stint was largely as a jobber before his release in 2006. He then spent several years with Full Impact Pro (FIP), where he achieved his first championship success, winning the FIP Tag Team Championship with Jason Blade in 2007. His tenure with Ring of Honor (ROH) began in 2007, where he formed the notable tag team The All Night Express with Rhett Titus. This partnership led to their first ROH World Tag Team Championship win in 2012.
