Widely recognised as the best male badminton player in the world, Kento Momota is famous for his unpredictable and explosive style of play. He is Japan’s first men’s singles world number one player and has won two World Championship titles, one All England title and two Asian Championship titles. Momota has been a dominating force in badminton for several years, but shortly after becoming world number one he was involved in a tragic car accident and nearly quit the sport, but with the support of his family, friends and fans has been motivated to carry on and go for gold in the Tokyo Olympics.
Momota‘s talent for badminton began as a child, and he won the prestigious All Japan Elementary School Championship title followed by the All Japan Junior High School Championships. He then progressed to competing in the 2011 World Junior Championship in Taiwan where he reached the semi-finals, and a year later became Asia Junior Champion.
In 2015 Momota became the first Japanese player to win a SuperSeries in Men’s Singles when he became the Singapore Open champion. 2018 saw him win the 2018 Asian Championship followed by the World Championship title in Nanjing.
After winning four BWF World Tour titles, he became the first Japanese men’s singles player to reach the World No. 1 spot.
2019 brought more success to Momota with victory in both the All England Open championship and another World Championship. At the start of the new decade Momota’s career was almost over when he was involved in a tragic accident on the way to the airport after winning the Malaysia Masters. Despite suffering injuries to his face, Momota is now on the road to recovery and has the Olympic gold medal within his sights once more.
