Kevin Greene made several appearances as a professional wrestler with the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) promotion during the late-1990s, aimed at generating mainstream publicity. He shared the ring with notable figures like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Roddy Piper, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Syxx, and The Giant. His professional wrestling career came to an end in 1998 due to NFL contract stipulations prohibiting him from wrestling.
Kevin Darwin Greene (July 31, 1962 – December 21, 2020) was an American professional football player who left an indelible mark on the NFL as a linebacker and defensive end. Born in Schenectady, New York, Greene’s early life as an ‘army brat’ saw his family moving frequently, including a three-year stint in Mannheim, Germany. It was during his time living in Germany at the age of 12 that his desire to excel in football began to burn. His family eventually settled in Granite City, Illinois, where he attended Granite City High School, excelling in football, basketball, and track. After graduating in 1980, he enrolled at Auburn University, where he walked on to the football team after initially attempting as a punter in 1980 and then successfully trying out in 1983. He became a standout player, leading the Southeastern Conference in sacks during his senior year in 1984, earning him the Zeke Smith Award as Defensive Player of the Year. He also earned a degree in criminal justice and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Alabama Army National Guard, completing airborne training to become a paratrooper, reaching the rank of captain.
Greene’s professional career began after being a fifth-round draft pick for the Los Angeles Rams in the 1985 NFL Draft. During his 15-season NFL career, Greene became one of the most feared pass rushers in league history, accumulating 160 sacks, which ranks third all-time. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. His unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of quarterbacks defined his playing style, earning him five Pro Bowl selections and three First-team All-Pro honors. Later in his career, Greene transitioned into coaching, serving as an outside linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers from 2009 to 2013, where he won Super Bowl XLV. He then held the same role for the New York Jets from 2017 to 2018. His impact extended beyond the field, with his passionate coaching style inspiring those he led.
