Tyrann Devine Mathieu, nicknamed “the Honey Badger,” was born on May 13, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St. Augustine High School where he excelled in football and track and field. After high school, Mathieu attended Louisiana State University (LSU), playing for the LSU Tigers football team from 2010 to 2011. During his college career, he became renowned for his tenacious play, earning the Chuck Bednarik Award in 2011 as the best defensive player in college football and finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist in the same year. He set a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record with 11 career forced fumbles, showcasing his ability to create turnovers. Mathieu’s college career ended with his dismissal from LSU for a violation of team rules, leading him to enter a drug rehabilitation program and subsequently the NFL Draft.
Mathieu was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (69th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2013. His time with the Cardinals was marked by a standout 2015 season where he recorded 89 combined tackles, 17 pass deflections, and 5 interceptions, leading to his first Pro Bowl selection and First-Team All-Pro honors. He also played for the Houston Texans in 2018, where he continued to demonstrate his defensive prowess with 89 combined tackles and 3 sacks. This consistent performance led to a significant contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019.
With the Kansas City Chiefs, Mathieu achieved significant team and individual success, including winning Super Bowl LIV in 2020. During his tenure with the Chiefs from 2019 to 2021, he earned two more First-Team All-Pro selections (2019, 2020) and two additional Pro Bowl nominations (2020, 2021), cementing his status as one of the league’s top safeties. His career progression highlights his ability to adapt and excel across different defensive schemes and teams. After his impactful time in Kansas City, Mathieu joined the New Orleans Saints in 2022, where he continued his consistent play, demonstrating his enduring value as a defensive leader. He retired from the NFL on July 22, 2025, after 12 seasons.
