Lonnie Marts Jr. was born on November 10, 1968, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St. Augustine High School in New Orleans before playing college football at Tulane University. During his time at Tulane, Marts played as a safety, displaying the athletic versatility that would characterize his professional career. He later made the transition to linebacker in the National Football League (NFL).
Lonnie Marts began his NFL career in 1991 as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs after being discovered by Tony Dungy. He played for the Chiefs from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Marts led the NFL in forced fumbles. He then moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played from 1994 to 1996. Following his tenure with the Buccaneers, he played for the Tennessee Oilers from 1997 to 1998, starting 15 games. His NFL career concluded with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played from 1999 to 2000.
After retiring from professional football in 2000, Marts dedicated his efforts to youth development and community leadership. From 2002 to 2014, he created and operated Godspeed Sports Performance, an organization focused on training athletes. He also served as Athletic Director and Head Coach at Harvest Community School from 2010 to 2020, where he successfully mentored numerous high school players to achieve Division 1 college placements. In 2020, Marts founded the Level the Playing Field Leadership Academy (LPFLA), a non-profit organization in Jacksonville, Florida, aimed at supporting and mentoring at-risk boys from fatherless families.
