Kevin James

Kevin George Knipfing, known professionally as Kevin James, was born on April 26, 1965, in Mineola, Long Island, New York. He was raised in Stony Brook and attended SUNY Cortland, where he pursued sports management while playing fullback on the football team. After sustaining an injury, he pivoted to community theater, discovering an affinity for comedic performance. This led him to join his brother Gary Valentine’s improv group, marking the beginning of an extensive career in comedy. James spent approximately 11 years performing stand-up, during which he refined his family-friendly comedic style and gained recognition, including an appearance on “Star Search” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” His participation in the 1996 “Just for Laughs” Montreal Comedy Festival proved to be a turning point, securing him a recurring role on Ray Romano’s popular sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.” His work in television allowed him to establish a foundational reputation in the entertainment industry.

Building on his television success, James starred in his own sitcom, “The King of Queens,” as Doug Heffernan from 1998 to 2007. This role cemented his image as an affable everyman and earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2006. His transition to leading film roles began with “Hitch” (2005), followed by other notable comedies such as “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” (2007), “Grown Ups” (2010), and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” (2009), many of which he also co-wrote and produced. He continued to expand his repertoire with films like “Zookeeper” (2011), “Here Comes the Boom” (2012), and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” (2015).

James explored dramatic roles in films such as “The Dilemma” (2011), “Little Boy” (2015), and “Becky” (2020), demonstrating versatility beyond comedy. He also lent his voice to animated projects including “Monster House” (2006), “Barnyard” (2006), and the “Hotel Transylvania” franchise (2012–2018). His return to television included the sitcom “Kevin Can Wait” (2016–2018), for which he received a People’s Choice Award nomination. His career also encompasses stand-up specials, with “Kevin James: Irregardless” released on Amazon Prime Video in 2024, highlighting his ongoing presence in various entertainment formats.
