Kira Walkenhorst

Kira Katharina Walkenhorst, born on November 18, 1990, in Essen, Germany, embarked on her professional beach volleyball career competing as a blocker. Her early career saw her accumulate various accolades, including bronze medals at the 2013 and 2014 European Beach Volleyball Championships. Kira’s dedication and athletic prowess led to her being recognized as the FIVB Most Improved Player and FIVB Top Rookie in 2013, indicating her rapid ascent in the sport.

The pinnacle of Walkenhorst’s career arrived when she partnered with Laura Ludwig. In 2015 and 2016, the duo secured gold medals at the European Beach Volleyball Championships. The defining moment came at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where Walkenhorst and Ludwig claimed the gold medal in beach volleyball after defeating the Brazilian team of Ágatha Bednarczuk and Bárbara Seixas. This Olympic triumph was followed by a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in Vienna, cementing their status as a dominant force in the sport. Throughout 2016, the pair also achieved notable success on the FIVB World Tour, culminating in being named FIVB Team of the Year and Walkenhorst receiving awards for Best Blocker and Best Hitter.

Despite her success, persistent injuries led to Walkenhorst’s retirement from professional competition at the start of 2019. However, she made a comeback to the national tour in 2020, participating in the German championships, and has expressed interest in targeting the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her career is marked by resilience and a consistent track record of high-level performance in beach volleyball.
