Christopher Catesby Harington, known professionally as Kit Harington, was born on December 26, 1986, in Acton, London. His early education included Southfield Primary School from 1992 to 1998, followed by Chantry High School in Martley, Worcestershire, until 2003. He developed an interest in acting at age 14 after seeing a production of “Waiting for Godot.” He further pursued this passion at Worcester Sixth Form College, studying Drama and Theatre Studies from 2003 to 2005. At 17, a performance by Ben Whishaw inspired him to attend drama school. He returned to London to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 2008.
Harington began his professional acting career in theatre, landing the lead role of Albert Narracott in the National Theatre’s adaptation of “War Horse.” This role brought him significant recognition and was followed by a part in “Posh” at London’s Royal Court Theatre. His breakthrough came when he was cast as Jon Snow in the HBO fantasy television series “Game of Thrones,” which premiered in 2011. The series gained widespread critical acclaim and became a global cultural phenomenon, with Harington’s portrayal of Jon Snow earning him numerous nominations, including two Primetime Emmy Awards. His work on “Game of Thrones” ran from 2011 to 2019, securing his place as one of television’s highest-paid actors.
Beyond television, Harington ventured into film, making his debut in “Silent Hill: Revelation” (2012). He took on his first major lead film role in “Pompeii” (2014) and provided voice work for the critically and commercially successful animated film series “How to Train Your Dragon” (2014, 2019). He also appeared in films like “Testament of Youth” (2014) and “Eternals” (2021), joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Harington has continued his stage career, featuring in productions such as “Doctor Faustus” (2016), “True West” (2018–2019), and “Henry V” (2022). He has also taken on writing and producing roles, including creating and starring in the BBC historical drama “Gunpowder” (2017) and executive producing the upcoming BBC One miniseries “A Tale of Two Cities” (2026). In recent years, Harington has appeared in the TV series “Modern Love” (2021), “Extrapolations” (2023), and “Industry” (2024).
